St. Luke's Choir

There has been a choir at St Luke’s for as long as anybody can remember. The photos in the vestry are testament to this. The current choir is ten in number, very enthusiastic, and together they really enhance the Sunday services, providing support for the congregation, introducing new music, singing anthems and generally enjoying their music.  They also sing at other church services, including weddings, funerals and sometimes baptisms too.

The choir and organist recently acquired new choir robes which look lovely.

New members are always welcome – ability to read music is an advantage, but dedication to practising and attending regularly are also important.

The choir practice on Thursday evenings at 8pm in the church.

For more information on joining the choir, please contact Sue Underwood (Organist and Choir Mistress) in the first instance.  Telephone: 01527 457274 or click here to email.

Sue Underwood took over as the new Organist  & Choir Mistress for St Luke’s Church on 1st January 2006. After 37 years service, Philip Tedstone retired as St Luke’s Organist and Choir Master, giving Sue the opportunity to develop and enhance the thriving musical activities within the church.  Sue is ably assisted by Jenny Messenger, Assistant Organist, who is also preparing to teach the basics of playing the pipe organ to youngsters from the local community.

The organ itself is a beautiful old instrument which produces the most wonderful sounds. When the player ‘pulls out all the stops’ it makes the church rafters shake!

An organ of this type, built in the 19th century, is familiar to many church organists today, with its 2 keyboards and full pedal-board. It is a simple instrument with a refined and elegant sound. It has a great range of dynamic effects, ability to make crescendo and diminuendo by use of its 'swell box', and provides a traditional backing to the hymns and music at St Luke’s church services.
